UB Community Service: Composting Technology Transforms Household Waste into Plant Nutrients in Ardimulyo Village, Singosari

Malang – Universitas Brawijaya, through its Doctor Mengabdi (DM) program and with the support of the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRPM), conducted a community service activity titled “Application of the Sustainable Eco-Community Concept in Utilizing Household Waste as Organic Fertilizer.” This initiative took place in Ardimulyo Village, Singosari District, Malang Regency, and involved students from the KKN-DM UB 2024 program. The activity introduced an innovative composting technology using Biowash Promic—a versatile liquid that can quickly transform organic waste into fertilizer.

Biowash Promic is a natural fermentation product that has been developed over the course of two decades. It combines water, fruit peels, and a Promic starter, all without any added sugars or chemicals. This innovative solution contains beneficial bacteria that not only speed up the breakdown of organic waste but also eliminate odors by killing harmful pathogens. With its user-friendly application method, Biowash Promic offers a practical way to reduce household waste accumulation while enriching the soil with organic nutrients.

“The application steps are simple and effective,” explained one of the KKN-DM UB students. The process begins by mixing Biowash Promic with water at a 1:30 ratio. This solution is then poured over the gathered organic waste and covered with a thin layer of soil. Within moments, the organic waste transforms into ready-to-use fertilizer, ideal for seed sowing and transplanting seedlings.

This program provides a quick solution for managing organic waste while also educating the residents of Ardimulyo Village about the importance of sustainable waste utilization. With the full support of Dr. Ir. Ary Mustofa Ahmad, M.P., the program leader and Field Supervisor (DPL), KKN-DM UB students hope that the Biowash Promic technology will enhance environmental awareness among residents and contribute to reducing pollution.

Ibu Wiwik, the manager of Griya Lestari Waste Bank in Sempol Hamlet, Ardimulyo Village, expressed her enthusiasm for the program. “Biowash Promic has significantly helped us in managing organic waste here. The process is quick and effective, preventing waste from accumulating and allowing it to be immediately transformed into fertilizer for plants. We hope this innovation continues to thrive,” she stated.

This initiative reinforces Universitas Brawijaya’s dedication to the Sustainable Eco-Community concept, aiming to improve food security through sustainable organic farming practices and fostering community involvement in environmental conservation.
